How Should a Bra Fit? The Complete Guide to Finding Your Perfect Bra Size
Finding a bra that fits properly can make a huge difference to your comfort, support and confidence. But how do you know whether your bra is actually the right size? From the back band and cups to the straps and underwire, every part of your bra should work together to give you the support you need.
At Brashopper, we specialise in beautiful lingerie and swimwear from leading brands including Panache, Freya, Fantasie and more, with a wide range of sizes and styles available.
In this guide, we'll explain how a bra should fit and the signs that it may be time to try a different size or style.
How Should a Bra Fit?
A well-fitting bra should feel comfortable and supportive without digging in, riding up or causing your breasts to spill from the cups. The band should sit firmly around your body, the cups should contain your breasts without bulging or gaping, and the underwire should sit comfortably around the breast tissue.
Remember that bra sizing can vary slightly between brands and styles. That's why your usual bra size isn't necessarily the perfect size in every bra you try.
1. The Bra Band Should Sit Firmly Around Your Body
The back band provides a large proportion of your bra's support, so getting the band fit right is extremely important.
Your bra band should sit horizontally across your back rather than riding upwards. It should feel comfortably firm without being painfully tight.
If the band is constantly riding up your back, it could indicate that you need a smaller back size. If the band feels uncomfortably tight and you have already checked that the cups are the correct size, you may need to try a larger back size.
2. Your Bra Cups Should Contain Your Breasts Comfortably
Your breasts should sit comfortably inside the cups without spilling over the top, sides or underneath.
If you're experiencing breast tissue spilling over the top of the cups, the cups may be too small. However, it is important to remember that cup size is related to the back size, so simply changing the cup letter isn't always the answer.
On the other hand, if you have noticeable gaps or excess fabric in the cups, you may need a different cup size or perhaps a different bra style.
3. The Underwire Should Sit Around Your Breast Tissue
On an underwired bra, the wire should sit around the breast rather than directly on breast tissue.
The centre section between the cups, known as the gore, should sit comfortably against your chest on styles designed to do so. The wires should feel supportive rather than digging painfully into your breasts or under your arms.
If the underwire feels uncomfortable, don't assume that underwired bras aren't suitable for you. The problem may be the size or shape of the particular bra.
4. Your Bra Straps Should Feel Comfortable
Bra straps provide some support, but they shouldn't be doing all the work.
Your straps should be adjusted so they sit comfortably on your shoulders without digging in or constantly falling down.
If your straps need to be tightened excessively to keep your breasts supported, check the fit of the band and cups as well.
5. The Centre of the Bra Should Sit Correctly
On many underwired bra styles, the centre section between the cups should sit comfortably against your chest.
If the centre is sitting away from your chest when the style is designed to sit flat, it may be worth checking your cup size or trying a different bra shape.
6. Try the 'Scoop and Swoop' Method
When putting on your bra, don't simply put your arms through the straps and fasten it. A technique often called the scoop and swoop can help you position your breast tissue correctly inside the cups.
Once your bra is fastened, gently lean forward and use your hand to guide breast tissue from underneath your arm and into the cup. Then adjust the straps if necessary.
This can make a surprising difference to how your bra looks and feels.
Signs Your Bra May Be the Wrong Size
Wondering whether your current bra really fits? Look out for these common signs:
- The back band rides up.
- Your breasts spill over the cups.
- The cups gape or wrinkle.
- The underwire sits on breast tissue.
- The straps constantly fall down.
- The straps dig painfully into your shoulders.
- The centre section doesn't sit correctly.
- Your bra feels uncomfortable after wearing it for a short time.
- You frequently adjust your bra throughout the day.
If you're experiencing one or more of these problems, it doesn't necessarily mean that you simply need a different size. Your breast shape and the design of the bra can also affect the fit.
Why Bra Style Matters
Finding the right size is only part of finding the perfect bra. Different bra styles are designed to create different shapes and levels of coverage.
For example, a plunge bra has a lower centre and can work beautifully underneath lower-cut clothing, while a balcony bra offers a different shape and level of coverage.
If you prefer more coverage, a full cup bra may be a great option. For everyday wear, a T-shirt bra can provide a smooth appearance underneath clothing.
Women with a fuller bust may particularly benefit from exploring different supportive styles, including balcony, full cup, plunge and side-support bras.
What If Your Bra Size Has Changed?
Your bra size can change over time. Weight changes, pregnancy, hormonal changes and simply getting older can all affect your breast shape and size.
If your bras suddenly don't feel as comfortable as they once did, it's worth reassessing your fit rather than continuing to wear an uncomfortable size.
